Christopher Columbus spotted and named the island Antigua in 1493. It became a main trading gateway for British vessels that used the many beautiful and natural harbors for safety en route to other colonies. Today it is famous for Antigua race week and boat show. June through November is considered hurricane season between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The wettest months are from August to December while February to June to the driest.
