Yacht charter certification requirements
To charter a yacht (bareboat) it is necessary to have experience and/or sailing certificates.
Mediterranean: to charter a yacht in the Mediterranean there must be at least one certified skipper and one experienced first mate on a charter yacht. As a yacht skipper, you are required to have a sailing license or a certificate from a recognized sailing school (ASA/CYA/RYA) indicating keelboat, day/coastal skipper or bareboat certification and you need to bring your original certificates with you. In addition to the above requirements you are required to have a VHF operator's license to charter a yacht in Croatia.
Caribbean/Pacific/Southeast Asia: no formal certificates are required to charter a yacht. You will be required to complete a sailing resume detailing your experience of sailing a similar sized yacht and in similar sailing conditions (ie: body of water, tidal vs non-tidal, long or short passages).
Experience levels
Each of our sailing destinations show the level of experience required to sail in that destination. This is shown for guidance only but will help you to decide your sailing experience level.
- Beginner level would be under 500 sailing miles as a skipper
- Intermediate level would be between 500-2000 sailing miles as a skipper
- Advanced level would be over 2000 sailing miles as a skipper
Mooring and anchoring
Mediterranean: mainly stern to in small harbors – Med mooring. There is limited anchoring off shore and no mooring balls (it is often too deep to anchor safely off shore). Some ports offer lazy lines for mooring. Read our Med Mooring tips.
Caribbean/Pacific/Southeast Asia: there are a mixture of mooring balls and swinging on anchor.
Yacht insurance
All yachts require a security deposit, damage waiver payment or a combination of both to insure them while on charter. Security deposits and damage waivers can be authorized by credit card or left in cash upon arrival at the base. Damage waivers may also be paid in advance at the time of booking. Security deposits range depending on the operator and size of yacht. Damage waiver insurance payments are daily or weekly amounts of coverage that greatly reduce or eliminate the security deposit amount. We advise yachts with full coverage for peace of mind while cruising wherever possible. Yacht insurance details will be provided with a full quotation for any yacht.
One-way charters
In some destinations it is possible to start your yacht charter in one destination and drop off in another, allowing you to see more on your journey. Additional one-way fees apply and vary according to the destination. One-way fee details will be provided with a full quotation for any yacht.
Provisioning
Most marinas are close to local good supermarkets. In some cases it is possible to pre-order some or all of your provisions. We will provide full provisioning details for your chosen location at the time of booking.
