Meet Our Captains and Program Directors

The Very Best Team in the Industry!

Captains make a huge difference on any charter. Our Captains and Program Directors are carefully selected and trained for exactly what the Aegean Adventure Cruises & Flotillas Program requires.

Steven Parry is Poseidon Charters’ Charter Director, and he has worked as a Captain and Flotilla Leader in Croatia, Greece and Turkey for 15 seasons. He is a Royal Yachting Association (RYA), Canadian Power Squadron and J-World Sailing School certified skipper. He is also a PADI Dive Master and is trained in first–aid. Steven studied archaeology with the Institute of Nautical Archaeology attending the University of Texas A&M Masters level course in marine archaeology. He also dove with the Hellenic Institute of Marine Archaeology on the oldest shipwreck in the world at Dokos Island. Captain Parry is convinced that charters sailing in the Eastern Mediterranean is one of the greatest travel experiences possible.

Frode and his wife Kristin Flatnes hail from Kristians and Norway. They are both certified ‘Sea Scout’ instructors who grew up sailing the cold waters of the North Sea. They both hold boating certificates with the Norwegian Maritime Authority. Frode currently owns two classic wooden boats. One is a Bermuda rigged Dragon built in 1941 on which he races with a three person crew. The other is a classic Norwegian double ender built in 1918. Frode is a registered nurse in the winter and sails with Poseidon Charters in May and June. This will be Frode’s sixth year with Poseidon Charters. Both he and Kristin are extremely safety conscious, warm hosts and are highly praised by all who sail with them.

Panos Gikas is recognized as one of the most knowledgeable skippers in Greek waters. He holds a Greek Captain’s license and has proven to be an indispensable part of our team. A cool, calm and capable skipper, Panos is at home on the sea with his guests. Chosen for his demeanor, his gentle humor wins over everyone he sails with. He is very personable and is respected and well-liked by everyone. He will even catch and grill octopus for guests! During the off season, Panos maintains the Archaeological Cruise yachts.

Skipper Thomas Vassilacos has been sailing professionally in Greece and Turkey for the last 17 years. From 1986 to 1989 with Kavos-Moorings. Since 1990, he has chartered only his own private 51 foot Beneteau which he ads to the Poseidon Charters fleet. Before that time, he lived in London for 10 years, studied film and made sailing documentaries in the Mediterranean and the North Sea. Now he is occasionally involved in media advertising projects with his yacht. He is a RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Ocean Yachtmaster and has a NOV Diploma (Offshore Nautical Club) a HCG (Hellenic Cost Guard) SpeedBoat License and LFS (London Film School) Diploma. He is an articulate captain who offers first class service and exceptional detail for dining aboard and ashore. Thomas is arguably one of the most experienced sailors in Aegean waters. His compelling tales of the wine dark Sea and his thorough knowledge of the ancient winds captivates his guests!

Yannis Christidis 36, has been one of the most desired skippers in the Aegean for 10 years. He was chosen by our charter director for his teaching abilities, island sailing knowledge, attention to safety and his up beat style of authority aboard. He is most well known for his dry sense of humor and practical jokes!

George Konistis is a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Instructor and has extensive experience working on charters in Croatia. A Greek native, he also speaks German and English. He applies his knowledge of the principals of physics to explain and teach sailing in Greece. George is a very emphatic sailor who brings a great passion to work each day. His sense of humor and ‘Greek comedy’ is enjoyed by all. At 6'10" he is easy to spot in the harbors and if we need someone sent to slay the Minotaur in Crete, George is the man!

Gary Watson is a citizen of the world but calls Perth, Western Australia, home. He grew up with boats and recently covered 3000 miles solo around the northern coast of Australia. He has worked as professional crew on maxi and super yachts for 10 years. He has done two trans–Atlantic crossing and numerous Indian / Pacific Ocean crossings. He has sailed with Poseidon Charters in Greece, Turkey, Australia and the Caribbean. Gary brings a lot of technical experience to the Poseidon Charters team. He has a boyish shyness about him and guests really like his quiet encouragement, teaching abilities and tales of the seven seas.

Sharon Weiner joined the company in 1997 as Program Director (PD) and has been instrumental in developing the position. She is knowledgeable on all the island visits and guides guests on many of the excursions. Sharon works several charters each year and is involved with briefings, provisioning and logistics for the Flotilla guests. All the guests appreciate her organizational skills and free spirit.

Additional Greek skippers have been selected for their expertise in the industry. Our Captains and Program Directors do a fantastic job and in our opinion are the best trained professionals working in Greece. See images and references on our website for more information on our team. A massage therapist will be scheduled aboard certain departures for hire.

Note: Poseidon Charters does not guarantee any particular program director or captain on any departure.
