Sailing in Greece 2017 end of week 3

Sailing in Greece 2017 end of week 3

The first week of our two-week round trip always ends down in the Cyclades and the island of Ios. Yesterday, we arrived quite early so many guests chose to explore the island in a fun way by quad bike. The bikes are only 50hp so for sure you get the see the beauty of the island when slowly climbing the many hills of Ios where the goats are walking faster than you are going in some cases!  Our new crew, Lana from Glasgow, set off with a few of the guests as this was her first time to Ios, we know Ios will become one of her favorites! We're pleased to have Lana onboard with us, newly qualified with her STCW95 certificate, she is not only trained in all aspects of safety and first-aid onboard, but she is also proving to be wonderful with the clients too - she has a great future in the yachting industry and we look forward to following her career.

Later in the day, everyone met up at Liostasi's 5 star boutique hotel for a swim and sunset cocktails. After our swim, a gorgeous soft yellow light fell over everything like a slow moving honey and we sat amongst the bougainvillea flower arrangements and ate a wonderful meal created by the Michelin Star rated chef at Yaya's (grandmas's) restaurant. The restaurants we select on our itinerary have taken years of exploration and research and our guests are received like royalty and treated like friends by the professional service industry staff.

It was goodbye for the Gallagher family from Virginia, Laurie and Eric from San Francisco and our South African flotilla friends. 4 news guest join good ship Christianna VIII tomorrow.

Sailing in Greece 2017 week 3

Sailing in Greece 2017 week 3

Week 3 already and a big Greek welcome to our new crew aboard the lead flotilla yacht our 60ft stunner, Christianna. This departure we welcome a family from Virginia including two young sailors aged 8 & 12 (we like to start them young!) and two other North American couples. The flotilla has an international vibe and our flotilla crews hail from South Africa, Manchester, UK and a group of Canadians aboard a brand new Lagoon 450 called SAO.

Leaving Athens on Sunday morning, the weather was unusually wet for Greece with rain off and on all day. It didn't dampen spirits though as the squalls made for some good sailing and excited sailing banter last night at the Garden taverna on our first island, Poros. The thing we enjoy most on our flotillas is the diverse groups of people we get sailing with us. As the itinerary is a bit more challenging, we have the more adventurous folks wanting to do the unique Cycladic flotilla and adventure always brings stories! At dinner it's wonderful to see people sit and eat with new friends and exchange stories and experiences from their part of the world - be it sailing related or not! Tonight, we are off to one of our favorite restaurants in Hydra...saganaki cheese is a must or is stuffed bell peppers, or could it be the dolmades...it's a tough choice so may have to have them all!

Sailing in Greece...week 2

Sailing in Greece...week 2

As the two-week flotilla circuit makes its way back to Athens, the 3-yacht flotilla group took a democratic Greek vote on Syros vs Mykonos and after visiting ancient Delos to see the sites they decided on a calm sea to Syros. Guests were greeted by port master Thanasis with his matching red port shirt and shoes, big smile and sky blue eyes! Syros offers yachtsmen electricity, water and wonderful showers. The island has a rejuvenated waterfront and now has a fabulous modern boardwalk and port facilities. Back on lead flotilla yacht Christianna, our two Lion King guests celebrated an anniversary over a delicious stir fry lunch served by the crew on a beautiful ceramic platter. The surprise for them at the end of the meal was to turn the empty platter over. They were very touched to see that guests and crew had signed the back for the couple to take home as a memento of cherished memories of their Greek Island sailing tour and their new-found friends.

Sailing in Greece...week 2

Sailing in Greece...week 2

It's always sad when a charter comes to an end and people go their separate ways. Week 1 ended on a high on the island of Ios, and as guests said their fond farewells, we busied ourselves getting lead flotilla yacht, Christianna ready for new arrivals. At 5pm, guests arrived to a glass of local kókkino (red) wine before heading up for sunset and dinner in the Chora (town) of Ios. This week, we welcomed repeat and new guests from Canada, the States and Cuba along with a newly married couple from the hit Broadway show the Lion King - we're looking forward to hearing Robbie sing like a Hyena! Sunday was a touring day on Ios, with a top picnic stop at Manganari beach and a homage to Homer. Homer was among the greatest poets in ancient Greek history who wrote epics like the Odyssey and Iliad. Legend has it that it was on the island of Ios where Homer took his last breath and now he lies buried in his grave at the northernmost part of island on a hill.

Leaving Ios, we headed north east for a night under the milky-way at Schinoussa and tonight we dined like kings at Apollon Garden restaurant on the island of Paros. Next stop, Delos and Syros. See the pics so far this season. Remember you can now follow us on instagram and share your best sailing pics at #poseidoncharters.

Sailing in Greece Poseidon Charters reviews

Sailing in Greece Poseidon Charters reviews

Everyone always asks us why can't we find recent feedback about Poseidon Charters on Trip Advisor? Well, the simple answer is we are not allowed to have Trip Advisor feedback - we have tried! Trip Advisor's regualtions stipulate that only accomodations, restaurants and day trips are offically allowed to be reviewed. If you find a 7-night sailing tours or bareboat charter reviews on TA, it's because they are listed as a one-day tour initially and get around it that way. As we don't offer anything for just a day, we can't be on there! You will however, find a few snippets about us on Adventure Travel forums on TA but our main source of feedback is really our Youtube channel where you can see genuine reviews from people who have been on our trips speaking directly to you - via the camera of course! We've just finished the first week of our 2017 sailing season and love this photo from Poseidon's facebook. Safe travels home guys.

The week so far in Greece.

The week so far in Greece.

The wonderful thing about sailing the Greek islands at the beginning of June, is that we catch the end of strawberry season. Our new Greek/American crewmate Johnathan helped out with the provisioning at Hydra island market and decided strawberries were in - can one ever have too many strawberries? Tuesday morning we left the cobbled laneways and roman architecture of Hydra behind, to catch up to flotilla yacht Ealis and her crew relaxing on deck and Capt Kostis holding a steady course for Kithnos. Upon arrival at Kolona bay, the girls from Ealis were among the first to ever hike up to the ridge overlooking the bay and they snapped some stunning images - thanks for sharing Ealis crew. Just a short hop around  the corner is Loutra harbour where a thermal spring just off the beach is perfect to hop from hot water to cold sea - we're told the hot and cold contrast therapy can help relieve pain, heal the body, and rejuvenate the mind which gave us the spirit to enjoy our first pirate night of the season - we even found a little four-legged pirate begging to join in! Tonight, well, we're enjoying fantastic food at Mamma Mia's restaurant in Sifnos a mix of Greek and Italian, what a combination!

Sailing in Greece...let the season begin.

Sailing in Greece...let the season begin.

Finally, the 2017 season is underway, as we left Athens yesterday on a windless passage to Poros. Our first day included a lunch stop for a hike to the temple of Aphaia in Aegina. Later in the day we arrived for an overnight in the Poros channel where we enjoyed a delicious dinner of fresh fish and lamb kleftiko at Garden Taverna. Looking stunning as always, Christianna VIII has welcomed aboard cabin charter guests from Canada and the States.  Following on flotilla with us are two monohulls and a 44ft catamaran, again with guests from the States and Canada. As the sun sets behind the hills, we're now camped out in Hydra for the night after a few guests took a hike up to the spectacular monastery. Our Floridian crew aboard the catamaran Georgina, are proving they can take good care of themselves after docking the yacht perfectly in Hydra...not the easiest port on our itinerary!

Hello from French Polynesia

Hello from French Polynesia

Ia Orana everyone! The countdown to our first flotilla in French Polynesian was a long one...years in the making in fact! We decided about 3 years ago that we would add to our Greece and Croatia summer destinations and set out to find a fantastic winter flotilla destination. We considered the BVI's again but decided to stretch our wings a lot further and for the past week, 3 catamarans plus the lead flotilla catamaran with cabin charter guests have been enjoying the turquoise waters of the Society Island chain in French Polynesia. Led by our very own Steven Parry, the flotilla has included cultural excursions such as pearl farms, vanilla plantations and ancient ceremonial sites. Remote motus have been visited for lunch, and coral gardens teaming with fish have circled the amazed snorkelers every day. The wifi signal has been almost none existent so it's been a real escape for the group but a few images have started slowing getting out from the Poseidon crew and I'm sure there will be more to follow at the end of the trip on 31st March. Enjoy the last 4 days everyone!

Flotilla or cabin charter?

Flotilla or cabin charter?

If you've never sailed, it's easy to be confused by the term flotilla. A flotilla of yachts is a group of yachts sailing together taking guidance from a lead flotilla yacht. The lead flotilla yacht has crew aboard who guide the group. To sail your own flotilla yacht, you need to be able to sail, have a sailing certificate and fill the yacht with your own group. What is different about our flotilla is that If you can't sail, or want to have a more relaxing vacation then we offer you the chance to book a cabin on the lead flotilla yacht. When you book a cabin aboard the lead flotilla yacht, some meals are also included and you will be onboard with others who are also just booking a cabin.

We've not quite finished the 2016 sailing season yet, but it's time to start thinking of next year! The 2017 dates for our unique Greek Cyclades flotilla and Croatian flotillas are now published.

US citizens travel to Cuba

US citizens travel to Cuba

Since President Obama's visit to Cuba earlier this year, we have seen a large increase in the numbers of US citizens wishing to visit the wonderful country of Cuba. Although the doors to Cuba have opened a little in recent months, it is still not currently possible for US citizens to visit Cuba in a tourist only capacity. Travel to Cuba for tourist activities remains prohibited by statute. There are, however, 12 categories of authorized travel.  The Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has issued general licenses in all 12 categories of authorized travel categories, subject to appropriate conditions.  This means that individuals who meet the regulatory conditions of the respective general license they seek to travel under do not need to apply for a specific license from OFAC to travel to Cuba. The 12 categories of authorized travel to Cuba are:

  • family visits;
  • official business of the U.S. government,
  • foreign governments, and certain intergovernmental organizations;
  • journalistic activity;
  • professional research and professional meetings;
  • educational activities;
  • religious activities;
  • public performances, clinics, workshops, athletic and other competitions, and exhibitions;
  • support for the Cuban people;
  • humanitarian projects;
  • activities of private foundations or research or educational institutes;
  • exportation, importation, or transmission of information or informational materials; and certain authorized export transactions.

Flotilla in Croatia week 1

Flotilla in Croatia week 1

As the summer moves on so does our flotilla schedule and we are now in Croatia at the end of our first Croatian adventure flotilla of 2016.  We've had 4 yachts on flotilla with a mix of monohulls and catamarans. The race was certainly on between the new Hanse and the Jeanneau yachts. We were delighted to also welcome back a few repeat clients from Annapolis, Maryland. Sharon, Rick and Carol thanks for coming back for more adventures with us! Some of the highlights of the week have been seeing the Krka falls, Hvar town and the organic wine farm at Vis and catching up with the little jack russell terrier there!! The weather has been a very mixed bag over the last two days and we have seen very strong night time bora winds, meaning we had to actually remain in port in Kastela an extra night. Tomorrow is a new day and we hope that for the start of the second week the wind slows down a little and normal sailing will resume!
You can see our week in pictures here.

Sailing in Greece...lots of wind and smiles!

Sailing in Greece...lots of wind and smiles!

We’re now well into our season and we’ve sailed with a fantastic fun bunch of people. It’s been a joy to be back on our flagship, Christianna VIII, her wonderful newly painted dark blue hull, really is a beauty in the harbors at 60ft on deck. Christianna must have brought us good luck too as we caught a huge yellow fin tuna on the way to Kithnos…enough to feed everyone on the flotilla! Last week, we had a lot of wind in the central Cyclades meaning we had to tweak the itinerary a little bit, but that is always part of the joy of sailing, and in our opinion replacing Mykonos with Syros is a win win anyway. The architecture and cobbled streets of Syros are charming and meandering through the streets smelling the bougainvillea creates an unforgettable memory. We’ve now just left Athens again and are heading to Poros at the start of another two week trip with a group of friends from the United States. Who knows what the weather has in store for us this trip? One thing is for sure, the sun will shine, the people will smile and we are pleased as always to be helping Greece; we thank those who book with us for not always believing what they read in the media and still travel to Greece to see how beautiful and safe it really is.

First flotilla of the season

After much talk in the media about refugees and the ongoing crisis in Greece, as we expected everything was as it should be in Greece! Sunny, friendly people, great food and the wine dark sea. The weather has been ultra calm for our first flotilla of 2016 and the flotilla have been able to take advantage of great sunbathing time...not so great for the avid sailors unfortunately! We started in Athens with a mixed group of monohulls with crews from the UK, the States and Canada. It was great as the first flotilla of the year always is to see our dear friends in our favourite island restaurants. Garden Taverna in Poros, Christina's Taverna in Hydra and believe it or not the best pizza this side of Italy at Mamma Mia's in Sifnos. After a fantastic beach BBQ at Kithnos and a very we are now halfway through our two week itinerary and enjoying the fun of Ios while a few of our flotilla gang visit Santorini for the weekend.

Latest Greece news

Latest Greece news

Poseidon Charters has 25 years’ experience sailing the Greek islands. Since the financial problems in Europe and the refugee crisis in the Middle East began, we have spent a lot of time reassuring people that Greece is still a viable and safe place to visit on holiday.  Instead of talking about the wonders of this fascinating cultural sailing destination, we find ourselves advising on safety and vacation quality on a daily basis. So we thought we would share our thoughts on what is happening in Greece.

We’re hearing a great deal in the media about the refugee crisis and the heart wrenching plight of those escaping conflict in war torn homelands. It is hard to not be affected by the images we see in the media. The facts, according to the UN Refugee Agency are that just over 1.1million refugees arrived by sea in 2015 with over 800,000 passing through Greece. The harrowing journey is a relatively short, but dangerous passage from Turkey to the Dodecanese islands of Kos, Chios, Lesbos and Samos. The vessels used to make the crossing are often flimsy, rubber dinghies or small wooden boats and many migrants have drowned in the rough winter waters of the Aegean Sea. The refugees do not intend on staying in Greece as their goal is to reach northern European countries like Germany, France and the UK, but due to the large numbers of migrants, the movement across borders is now painfully slow. In recent weeks, we have also seen the closing of some borders meaning migrants have set up camp at the crossings.

To put the distances into perspective, the Aegean Sea is vast and made up of four cruising areas, each separately much bigger than all the British Virgin Islands combined. Our base in Athens is in the Saronic Gulf, some 460km away from Lesbos and over 15 sailing hours away from the Dodecanese chain. This equates to more than the distance between St Martin in the Leeward islands and Martinique in the Windward islands of the Caribbean. If St Martin was in crisis, we know this would definitely not stop people sailing the Leeward islands from Martinique past Dominica, up to Guadaloupe, then on to Montserrat, Antigua, Barbuda etc.

Moving onto the economic crisis, last summer while in Greece we were shocked to see reports on world news indicating that tourists could not access money from ATM bank machines and claims that people were having problems getting food in stores. We shopped throughout the season in those apparently ‘empty' stores without issue ensuring our flotilla yachts and cabin charter clients received breakfast, lunch and other snacks every day. The banking crisis which restricted the movement of local money in Greece, allowing Greeks to only withdraw up to €60 per day, did not affect tourist debit cards which allowed €600 per day. Most of our Greek friends joked about this, saying they would rarely withdraw €60 per day anyway!

Contrary to what has been stated in the press, Greece fared well economically in 2015 with its biggest tourism season ever! Last year alone, Greece had over 25 million tourists - a 15% increase since 2014. The Greek yachting industry also benefitted in 2015, as fewer people chartered in Turkey. Yacht prices continue to increase with new and larger models entering the market. The Greek people are now finding more creative ways of keeping their money in Greece and within new government taxation laws, by purchasing a new model yacht that protects their money and guarantees a minimum of 5 years of charter income. It is true that VAT tax has gone up from 6.5% to 11.5%, but within the realm of costs in Europe, this is finally at par with other European nations.

In closing, we would say that island hopping down the Saronic Gulf and Cycladic island chains from Athens, one gets the sense that there is no economic or immigrant issues at all. Islanders are happy and friendly, shops and restaurants are open and tourists abundant. We would urge everyone to not be dissuaded by the bad press that Greece has been receiving. The Greek islands are definitely open for business and for the sake of the Greeks, for Europe and even for the sake of the migrants, Greece needs tourism dollars spent in 2016!

Poseidon Charters’ chosen charity for 2016 is Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontiers (MSF). MSF offers refugee new arrival first assistance, as well as sea rescue activities and mobile clinics in a number of locations in Greece.

Sailing in Greece end of the season

Sailing in Greece end of the season

It's been a while since we posted on our News page and we're sorry about that! September was a very windy month and this meant typing at the same time as sailing was not possible for our crew! Our 29th August departure left Athens with two cabin charter yachts and midway through the first week, we were lucky enough to have our first overnight anchorage of the year at Kleftico on the southwest tip of Milos. Kleftico is a spectacular stop and the dinghy tours through the caves to the old pirate haunts is an unforgettable experience for everyone. The 12th September departure, will go down in history as the trip with lots of yachts, strong wind, much fun but definitely a few problems thrown in - par for the course when nine yachts are involved, this is adventure sailing after all! Clients joined us from Australia, Canada, United States and the UK aboard the three cabin charter yachts and we saw birthday celebrations, yacht breakdowns and fouled anchors on many occasions! The stories from this departure will go on for many years we are sure! Finally the last departure of the year was a just a quick week but ended the season on an amazing high. When friends and family travel together it always generates a unique type of vacation for everyone - this trip was no exception and we can honestly say that we have never heard so much laughter coming from two yachts in the history of Poseidon! We really hope that we get to sail with the 'Sanders' group again!

If you want to get a feel for who takes our trips and what happens, then all the photos from this year's sailing season are now on our facebook page - click here to view

Meanwhile in Greece!

Meanwhile in Greece!

With everything that is happening in Greece at the minute, it is easy to forget that we have trips that are taking place. It's easy to forget not because it's unimportant, but more because everything is still the same and people are saiilng, shopping, and eating wonderful food in the restaurants. This trip has to be called the ‘2015 family flotilla week’ with Poseidon Charters! It was a large departure from Athens and included families from Calgary, Canada with a 12 and 8 year old; a family from Montreal with 3 kids; 8,12 and 14. A family from California with 2 teenage boys and a double family on a large catamaran from Long Island New York with relatives coming from Rome! There was also a family coming from Australia meeting relatives from Bahrain! Great fun was had by all as the boats set sail from Athens and kids hiked up to see the Classical temple of Aphaia before cooling off in Aegean sea!. Hydra offered more swimming, donkey rides and kids had fun paddling the dinghies! We were sad to lose a couple of people from our lead cabin charter yacht who decided to leave for personal and medical issues but we hope that they sail with us again in the future on a different trip. As with the democratic vote in Greece this week, the group took a vote on the choice of islands, and decided to skip Mykonos this trip and headed for the beauty of Syros on their way back to Athens.

Sailing in Greece beach BBQ

Sailing in Greece beach BBQ

The adventure started this week with 5 yachts and guests coming from California, Australia, Canada and UK. There was lead yacht Christianna with her crew from Windsor Ontario, the second lead yacht Poseidon with folks from UK, Chicago and California. Joining the flotilla we had 3 yachts,  with crews from Queensland Australia, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The flotilla motor sailed through Aegina, Poros and Hydra with very hot and still weather, finally finding some relief from the heat swimming at Kythnos. Arriving at the sand bar we enjoyed a huge BBQ for 24 people. On the menu was grilled lamb, chicken, juicy Hydra sausage and kalamari stuffed with tomatoes and feta cheese. A wonderful time was had by all ashore while the food was expertly grilled by Capt. Satefanos and Capt. Steve. Once the meal was eaten ‘buffet style’ aboard the rafted yachts, 2 bonfires and 20 tea lights lit up the beach from one end to the other. A few late night guests made it to the hot tub for some milky-way gazing and an after dinner nite-cap! Another unforgettable night experienced under the Aegean stars!!

Sailing in Greece the return to Athens

Sailing in Greece the return to Athens

From our halfway point at Ios we skipped through the waves past Homer's point to the little islet of Skinoussa. Here we indulged ourselves at Sweet Deli taverna, on Kalamari stuffed with sundries tomatoes and feta cheese along with a delicious local goat with fettuccine. Heading North after Skinoussa,  we arrived for a swip stop at Tigania and a fantastic lunch prepared by the crew. Everyone swam and loved the azure waters of this little cove just around the corner from Paros island. A group decision to skip Mykonos was made so next we sailed to the very beautiful and less visited island of Syros where everyone hiked up to see both the Catholic and Orthodox cathedrals on their respective hills! We're always on the look out for new restaurants to add to our repotoire and in Syros wondering the streets the crew found a new restaurant named Mazi. The beautiful lush vegitated dining courtyard is surrounded by 19th century arches meeting 40ft in the air! Said to be an old ceramics factory, but more likely to have also been a church at some point, Mazi was put down as one to try on future trips! Sailable winds took us all the way back to Athens via stops at Paros and Kea. A perfect cruise was the consensus arriving back in Athens on Friday evening.
