Poseidon Charters is very proud that for over 25 years we've been the operator of our unique Greek island sailing tour by the cabin and flotilla. Over the past 10 years we developed our flotilla and cabin charter in Croatia and in recent years cabins and flotillas in French Polynesia on bi-yearly basis.
So where did it all start? In the early 1990's one of the owners of Poseidon Charters, Captain Steven Parry, did the typical travel journey after leaving University and set off to backpack around Europe. The majority of Steven's time was spent in Greece and while there, he took an unpaid job as crew on a yacht and that first summer saw 15 or so islands. After returning to Greece the next year and the year after that he finally realised that his career would be in the yachting industry rather than Communication Studies! After all the necessary commercial Captain courses, Steven then started the very first by the cabin charters in Greece and up until about 8 years ago, we were still the only company offering these type of tours. Over 25 years later, at the company's core is still a deep love for all things sailing, Greece, it's islands and people. We operate our cabin charter and flotilla programs May through September in Greece. Our administrative office is in Canada's capital Ottawa and is open year-round.
You have lots of choice and it can be very hard to decide who to sail with we know that and it depends on what is most important to you. At times you may find a charter costing a little less than ours but are you 100% sure what you getting? You'll find many adventure travel companies offering sailing tours and yacht charters but in many cases, you may speak to staff who have never been to the country they are offering and may not even sail. We only offer destinations where we have first hand sailing and travel knowledge and our personalized service, and longevity have allowed us to gain great standing in the yacht charter and travel market place. In addition to our own Greek island programs which we still proud to run ourselves, we also offer programs and charters by partners whom we know, trust and have represented for years. Working directly with trusted partners has not only enabled us to offer more choice to our customers but means we can guarantee the services offered.

All our skippers and program directors do a fantastic job each year running the cabin charters and flotillas in Greece and Croatia. We are unable to guarantee any particular captain or program director on a specific date until very close to departure but it is most likely that you will sail with one of the following skippers and program directors.
Steven Parry (Greece and Croatia) is our very own charter director and works as a skipper on most of the spring and fall Greek and Croatian departures. He is a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) commercial captain who has also trained with J-World, the Canadian Power Squadron and is a certified PADI Divemaster. This will be Steven's 22nd season in the Mediterranean. Steven has a BA in communication studies and attended the University of Texas A&M Masters level course in marine archaeology. He also dove with the Hellenic Institute of Marine Archaeology on the oldest shipwreck in the world at Dokos Island. Steven is convinced that sailing in the Eastern Mediterranean is one of the greatest travel experiences possible.
Akis Papasarantis (Greece) is an energetic 50 year old who studied Economics, Literature and Physics and is one of the founding members of the PanHellenic Skippers Association. He has 25 years' experience guiding and skippering international guests with all the major charter companies in Greece. During the winter he does yacht maintenance and he has delivered over 30 new yachts from France to Athens. Everyone who sails with him find Akis polite, cheerful and competent. Fishing, cycling, cooking are Akis’ other interests.
George Sifanios (Greece) lives on the island of Paros and has been a professional skipper in Greek waters since 1985. One of our most educated skippers, George holds a BA in Ecology and an MA in Economics as well as an Offshore Sailing Diploma. George is a joy to sail with as he is warm, welcoming, unassuming and has a unique sense of humor. His knowledge of the islands, ports and winds is second to none and he is happy to share with anyone who is interested.
Capt Bruno Kostadina (Croatia) was born and lives on the beautiful peninsula of Istria in northern Croatia. He finished the Nautical Academy and obtained his Captains license (Master of 3.000 GT) becoming a master of ocean going cargo vessels in the mid 1970's. He is a Yacht Master and a member of Adriatic Ship Master's Association and National Croatian Sailing Association. Bruno knows every bay and island along the Croatian coast and has been our gracious host for the last 5 seasons guiding our Croatian Adventure cabin and flotilla program.
Sharron Ranby from the UK, came aboard in the spring of 2010. A keen sailor, she left her corporate marketing life behind to fulfill her ambition to sail the world, starting in Malaysia and Thailand. Sharron holds her RYA day skipper qualification and her warm personality and sense of fun and adventure makes guests feel welcome the minute they step aboard. Sharron's marketing background is invaluable in creating our company branding and website.
Sharon Weiner joined the company in 1998 as program director and has been instrumental in developing the position over the years. She is knowledgeable on all the island sites and guides guests on many of the excursions. Guests appreciate her organizational skills and her free spirit. Sharon joins us every few years and
At Poseidon Charters we are concerned about the environmental footprint we create. Responsible travel is about respecting and benefiting local people, animals and the environment we visit.
Our staff aboard the Aegean and Croatian Adventure tours, make every effort to help the sea and marine environment in our destinations by doing the following:
We request that our partner operators be as environmentally conscious as possible.
There are only seven types of salt-water turtles on Earth. All species are endangered and two are found in Greece. Referred to as Caretta Caretta, the Logger Head and Green turtles are ancestral visitors to these waters. Each year Poseidon Charters' staff spot them on the surface and make sure they are okay. On some occasions, turtles are caught up in plastic bags and debris or hooked on swordfish long lines. On two occasions, Poseidon Charters' captains and crew have had to capture and safely release these enigmatic and beautiful creatures. We encourage all sailors worldwide to keep a watch for turtles and assist them whenever possible.
The Greek islands are known for their stray cats and dogs and we love them all! Each year tourists are welcomed by these friendly felines and slender canines, and we love to feed them as we sail from island to island, giving many of them names. The problem still exisits after we leave as winter in the Greek islands can be very difficult for hungry strays. Many of them die of starvation, mange or by municipal culling programs.
Poseidon Charters' staff encourages and will assist visitors to take animals home with them. All that an animal needs to travel is a portable plastic cage and a clean bill of health. A rabies shot and an animal passport can be arranged with one simple telephone call to a local Athens veterinarian.
We were delighted to welcome Shannon Acton onboard with us in September 2016. Shannon is a published journalist for the LA Travel Magazine and she wrote about her experience of cabin charter sailing in Greece and our 60ft lead flotilla yacht Christianna.

Poseidon Charters was called upon in September 2001 to assist in a sea rescue off the Aegean island of Paros. The ferry Samina Express collided with rocks three kilometers off shore. At the time, Poseidon Charters was conducting a four-yacht flotilla and had been moored in the harbor for several nights with bad wind conditions of over 40 miles per hour.
Large fishing vessels responded immediately to the mayday call. Poseidon Charters' yachts, Margarita and Annito, responded several hours after the ferry sank when they were notified. Captains and crew on the flotilla managed to save eight lives in five-meter seas, gale force wind conditions and in pitch darkness. Eighty people drowned on that night.
For their efforts, captains involved in the rescue received the Greek Merchant Marine Medal of Honor. A ceremony was held at the Canadian embassy for Captain Steven Parry. We encourage all sailors to respond to emergencies but highly recommend making sure that you don't become a risk yourself. As a result of our rescue, we have been published in numerous newspapers and magazines, have appeared on television shows and have given seminars on sea rescue.
