1) The biggest difference: the actual sailing. Croatia is easier.

The Croatian islands are packed relatively close together. You can often sail for a couple of hours, arrive at another island, swim, have lunch and explore a town that evening. That makes Croatia particularly attractive for a 7-day charter or a group where not everyone is an experienced sailor.

Greece is much more expansive. The sailing distances can be considerably longer, and the experience varies dramatically depending on where you charter.

For example:

• Ionian Islands — calmer, greener and easier
• Saronic Gulf — relatively sheltered and convenient from Athens
• Cyclades — spectacular but windier and more challenging
• Dodecanese — beautiful, historic and excellent for experienced sailors

The Meltemi is particularly important in the Aegean during summer. It can produce strong winds, especially around the Cyclades in July and August.

2) Beaches and swimming

This is where I'd give Greece the edge if your priority is beautiful swimming and secluded anchorages.

Greek chartering can feel much more like: Wake up → jump into crystal-clear water → breakfast on the yacht → sail to a deserted cove → swim → lunch → another beautiful anchorage. There are huge numbers of islands and anchorages, so you can build a trip around swimming and privacy.

Croatia is also stunning, but the coastline tends to be more rocky/limestone and pebbly, rather than the sandy beaches many people associate with Greece.

If you love dramatic turquoise water, little coves and swimming straight off the yacht, Greece would probably be your better choice.

3) The towns and evening experience

This is where Croatia becomes very attractive. You can combine sailing with beautiful historic towns such as:

• Dubrovnik
• Hvar
• Korčula
• Trogir
• Šibenik
• Vis

There is a strong Venetian/medieval/Roman feel, with waterfront restaurants, bars and beautiful old towns. 

Greece has wonderful villages and harbour towns, but the experience is different — more whitewashed buildings, tavernas, churches, little fishing harbours and traditional Greek island life.

Winner: Croatia: better if you want sailing + historic towns + restaurants + nightlife.
Winner: Greece: better if you want sailing + beaches + traditional island life + secluded anchorages.

4) Food

I'd give Greece a slight advantage, particularly if you're looking for casual, authentic food.

When you imagine Greek food, the mouth waters at...

🐟 Fresh grilled fish
🍋 Lemon potatoes
🥗 Greek salads
🧀 Feta
🐙 Octopus
🍅 Tomatoes
🫒 Local olive oil
🍷 Greek wine

Croatia is excellent for seafood too, particularly Dalmatian cuisine, and has some superb local wines, but there's something particularly enjoyable about finishing a day of sailing in Greece and having dinner at a tiny waterfront taverna.

Winner: Greece — narrowly

5) Marinas and convenience

Croatia has a very well-developed marina infrastructure, with numerous marinas distributed throughout the cruising area. The islands are also close enough together that you can frequently choose between anchoring, mooring or going into a marina.

Greece is more about anchoring and smaller harbour stops. That's actually part of its charm, but it means the experience can be less polished and predictable.

If you want: “We arrive, walk off the yacht, have dinner, shower, plug into shore power and stroll into town.” Croatia is easier.

If you want: “Let's find a beautiful bay and anchor for the night.” Greece is fantastic

6) Privacy & feeling of escape

This is one of the reasons I'd particularly recommend Greece for a private crewed yacht or luxury catamaran.

There are enormous numbers of islands and secluded anchorages, and you can design a route away from the busiest places.

Croatia has some spectacularly beautiful anchorages, but the most famous areas around Hvar, Split and Dubrovnik can become busy during July and August.

Winner: Greece — narrowly

7) Cost

This one needs a little caution because online comparisons can be misleading.

Current 2026/27 pricing sources don't agree on which country is cheaper overall. Some show Greece cheaper for comparable yachts, while others show Croatia cheaper depending on yacht type and charter category.

The important thing is that the yacht's headline price isn't the whole cost.

You need to compare:

• Yacht charter
• VAT
• Skipper/crew
• Fuel
• Marina/mooring fees
• APA for crewed yachts
• Food/provisioning
• Transfers
• Water toys
• Insurance
• End-cleaning/charter fees

Greece can benefit from more inexpensive/free anchoring and town quays, whereas Croatia has more developed marinas but those berths can add substantially to the weekly cost, so we wouldn't suggest choosing between them based purely on the advertised yacht price.

So in summary which one to choose really depends on the type of holiday you want.

Choose Greece if you want:

🌅 Secluded anchorages
🍽️ Authentic Greek food
🏛️ Ancient history
☀️ Classic Greek-island scenery
🛥️ A luxury yacht experience
🌊 More of a sense of adventure
❤️ Romance/privacy

Particularly look at the Saronic Gulf or the Ionian Islands if you want relatively calm sailing, or the Cyclades if you're experienced and want the iconic Greek-island experience.

Choose Greece if you want:

🍷 Restaurants and nightlife
⚓ Excellent marinas
🏝️ Lots of islands close together
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 An easy family/group holiday
🗺️ A lot of places without spending hours sailing between them
