We are lucky enough here at Poseidon Charters to sail in Greece from May through to the end of September. We know the islands we love to visit time and time again but we always ask our sailors after their trip what is their favourite island. CONGRATULATIONS! We are really pleased to announce that the winner of our FREE trip to GREECE competition is John from Ontario, Canada. John has been reading Poseidon News for the past few years and has always wanted to go to Greece so we couldn’t be more pleased that the trip goes to a deserving winner. John and his wife will be sailing with us in 2016. We look forward to showing you Greece John.

The holiday season is over and as the decorations come down, our thoughts turn to the boat shows. Our first shows are in January in Toronto and Chicago – we look forward to seeing you there.

For our last departure, Christiana VIII, Margarita and flotilla yacht Marilena left Athens. We welcomed Stephanos onboard Christiana VIII – a new skipper to Poseidon but a veteran Greek skipper with a passion for fishing! Day one Christiana’s skipper caught his first fish of the trip, but it was Steven and the South African’s aboard Margarita who reeled in the big tuna for BBQ bay at Kithnos. There was great food, music and dancing that night in a deserted bay, where under the stars the mirror ball glittered for birthday celebrations. As the evening came to a close a few people went by dinghy to the beach to light a fire while others sat in the hot thermal spring waters Kithnos is famous for – a spectacular evening for everyone. The next day, after a perfect sail into Ios, we said goodbye to our new South African, Irish and Canadian friends aboard Margarita then on Sunday we welcomed Sawadee a lagoon catamaran with a group of friends from Vancouver.

Some trips are more challenging than others, and we wouldn’t be honest if we said everything was smooth sailing all the time! Our new girl Christiana VIII had her fair share of issues on this departure. The crew led by Marjorie and George had owned yachts so were accommodating of Christiana’s water pump breaking for 36 hours, her brand new engine not starting for a few hours and other mechanical issues that we encountered for the first few days! With the very hot weather still with us, in Poros a cold hose shower on shore turned into great fun – Marjorie and gang, we can’t thank you all enough for bearing with us while repairs were completed. Unfortunately, when guests aboard Margarita also started experiencing problems, we began to wonder if we had upset the Greek gods in some way with issues that were not so easy to resolve immediately as much as we tried. By the end of the two-weeks it turned into the most memorable of the season, not just because of the problems but more so because of the people sailing with us. A group of nearly 40 people came together from all over the world and had fun regardless. The effort put into pirate night by all the yacht crews will be remembered for a long time; Mary from Kentucky, your shining personality truly made us smile every day; Stan and Glenda from Oregon you are very special people and last but not least the Stolls from Australia, your third trip with us, you guys are like wine…you get better every year!! 

Each year at the end of August we sail a 1-week hop into the Cyclades with just our cabin charter yacht. This year Margarita headed out of Athens with an all American contingent of non-sailors. The week proved to be the hottest week of the summer with temperatures souring into the 40’s and that is Celsius! Margaritas 60ft deck sure came in handy for cooler sleeping spots – a highlight when under the stars at Kithnos! Leaving Cape Sounion on Friday lunch, it was the best sail of the year so far with all the sails up right back into Alimos marina. It was the perfect end to a fun week giving everyone the chance to take the helm and see what sailing is all about. One-week trips are always over so quickly but we had a great time – Paige, Ralph, Sherrie, Paul, Laurie and Fred, thanks for sailing with us.
