Our Fall Greek flotilla departures resumed in full force this last week with a group of 68 from the States and Canada. We welcomed the Northern Lights Sailing club from Minnesota joining the flotilla in Greece following our two lead cabin charter boats. The meltemi winds were long gone on our first week of the two-week itinerary, making it easy for all the sailors to dock in the tiny Greek harbours of Poros, Hydra, Kythnos, Sifnos and Ios. Pirate night was definitely one of the colourful highlights of the week – by far the largest group of pirates we have had on the small island of Kythnos. Many brought costumes from home and it turned into a very fun evening for everyone involved and the locals watching us walk around the harbour! We’re now camped out in Ios getting ready for a new group of cabin charter guests arriving this afternoon – Christianna and Santorini are now ship shape and waiting for the ferry to arrive!

After sailing in Greece for over 25 years, we consider Greece to be our second home. We’ve all been watching the news in recent days regarding the terrible fires at Mati, east of Athens. The images and words on our screens are difficult to see and our hearts go out to our wonderful Greek friends and partners who have lost loved ones or have been affected by this terrible tragedy.

Greetings from our cabin charter boat in Greece where, we’ve been busy sailing and touring the islands since the beginning of June. This week we visited a very old friend of ours – the island of Milos.  The weather has prevented us going for a few years but this trip the stars and wind aligned and we travelled 135 degrees for 58 miles to the incredible island of Milos. Geologically much older than the rest of the Cyclades, the collapsed 6-mile round caldera is made up largely of compressed volcanic fallout, chalk and pumice and the island is in a continual metamorphosis from both wind and sea erosion. Our anchorage for the night was ‘Kleftiko bay’ derived from the word Kleptomania – to steal, as this was a pirate hang-out over the centuries of Ottoman occupation.  This area is riddled with marvellous sea caves forged by relentless waves in the winter months as well as some carved out by pirates of the past. On our journey to Milos we trolled a fishing line and looked out for dolphins. There were no bites until we dropped the sails and then the reel buzzed for over a minute, as a powerful fish took the lure. After 45 minutes we landed the biggest yellowfin tuna we have ever caught in our 26 years guiding guests through the Aegean – WOW!  The BBQ that night was magical and with a calm sea and light northerly winds, guests thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon of snorkelling through the echoing caves, and star gazing late into the evening. Milos is a Mediterranean marvel and we love it.

We’re pretty excited that our sailing vacations in Greece are well underway. Arriving for the very first time in Hydra, it’s hard not to feel the chic vibe and elegance of this cosmopolitan harbor town. You wouldn’t be far wrong if you imagined you had arrived on the movie set of a charming love story as this boutique island is well-known for its romantic past. Hydra is where “Boy on a Dolphin”, starring Sophia Loren, was filmed, where Elizabeth Taylor is rumored to have had a home and where Leonard Cohen was inspired to write many of his touching lyrics and music. Cohen’s “Bird On The Wire” creation came from the poet’s time in the ’60s living on Hydra, where he witnessed the construction of telephone poles and the birds on the wire ignited the songwriter’s imagination. “So Long Marianne”, dedicated to Cohen’s girlfriend also played out in the quiet laneways of Hydra after Cohen met Marianne and said she was most beautiful woman he had ever met.
